Scenario

After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot named Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island

To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the animals on the island and cares for an orphaned baby goose. Lupita Nyong’o is joined by writer-director Chris Sanders to discuss notable credits and their time together making The Wild Robot. According to author Peter Brown, the inspiration for “The Wild Robot” came from a sketch he made of a robot in a tree. He then asked, “What would an intelligent robot do in the wild?” When the fox enters the lodge, a moose near the door grunts but the sound effect used is a recording of a bear.

I laughed so hard during the first act at the brilliant and natural comic moments shared from Peter Brown’s book of the same name. In the second act I was amazed at where this story arc was taking the audience and in the third act I felt salt water in my eyes. The all-star voice cast of Lupita Nyong’o, Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice” is so hot right now), Bill Nighy, Matt Berry (“Toast of London”), Ving Rhames, Mark Hamill, Pedro Pascal and so many more do an incredible job bringing this script to life, supported by the lush atmosphere of the island and the beautiful creatures that inhabit it. Director Chris Sanders’ obsession with animation, from “Lilo and Stitch” to “The Croods,” paid off in “The Wild Robot.” This film shows us that sometimes in order to survive, you have to become more than you were designed to be.

Girlie (Dakota Johnson) arrives in NYC at JFK and boards a yellow cab driven by Clark (Sean Penn). They have an intense conversation.This is one of those two-handers. The actors are mostly in a confined space by themselves. Girlie does constantly text with somebody and that person is almost a third character in the play.

The audience is discovering them as they do

It is a rich cinematic tradition with movies like My Dinner with Andre. In a way, this is more engaging since they start out as strangers. There are some great ups and downs in the conversation although one turn falters in my opinion. She is telling the story about her father and Clark doesn't push her at the end.

Instead, he lets it float away

That is a human instinct, but for the drama, he needs to push. There are obvious implications and he needs to give them voice. It's also a time in the story where the tension needs to keep building all the way to the climax. In the end, they never considered what I was thinking and that's a little disappointing.

The script seems to be smarter than that

Still, it's a very engaging ride all the way to the end.
