The first episode felt 50-50 to me
After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams learns that most of the world has been struck by a mysterious disease. Yet despite his increased isolation instincts, Ish leads the charge to develop a new civilization. Based on the novel “Earth Abides” by George R. Stewart.. Listed on Korman Productions’ Deep Dive TV podcast: Earth Abides on MGM+ Deep Dive Episode 1 “Alone” with Dave and Stacie (2024).
When the second epic came along, things got worse
The premise seemed interesting enough to overlook any potential plot holes, and I preferred the suspenseful series. I assumed the Vegas lights would actually stay on since Vegas is powered by the Hoover Dam. The first 30 minutes of this 50-minute ordeal were a bunch of nothing. It's like watching a love story/soap opera, cliché after cliché... You could say the last 20 minutes were redemptive, but no.
Which is resolved by feral cats
The most exciting scene is a brief rat invasion. Does this make sense to anyone? And even if there are, why is it a topic? And how come this guy has been living alone for a year and hasn't installed a solar power plant? Or more importantly, why hasn't he found a house that already has one?
And as a result, nothing happens
Surely there are better houses than his old family home, like houses by a river, a lake, the ocean - all important sources of food? Instead, he decides to stay in a random dead end in the suburbs... We see that he's alone, but at the same time, he does literally nothing to search his surroundings. He doesn't have a radio, he doesn't leave any traces, he doesn't investigate. Basically, he's the most boring protagonist ever...
