In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to shoot an adult film on a rural Texas farm. But when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew must fight for their lives. The day after the premiere of “X” (2022) at “South by Southwest,” writer-director Ti West announced that he had written a prequel called “Pearl” (2022) during a mandatory two-week COVID-19 quarantine in his New Zealand hotel before production on that film could begin. He asked star Mia Goth if she wanted to stay in New Zealand and shoot “Pearl,” and she readily accepted the offer.
The prequel was released later in 2022. When Lorraine enters the basement and turns on the light, a modern halogen lightbulb is seen there, which was not around in 1979. Maxine: I will not accept a life I don’t deserve. The title only appears on screen at the end.

I originally watched this film as an introduction to Mia Goth’s acting, who I must say is incredible in this film. I was thrilled to see such a star-studded cast, including Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow. If you’re looking for a nostalgic 70s/80s style slasher film, this film might be for you. The motives of the characters in this film left a lot of room for explanation and didn’t land well in my eyes.
That being said, this film serves as an introductory film to the prequel, Pearl, which is much better executed, and X is absolutely worth watching just to experience Pearl in all its glory. However, I look forward to the character development in the partner films surrounding this storyline. A24 has produced some of the most memorable horror films of the 21st century.
